Pending Font

"Pending Font" is an artistic endeavor that delves into the nuanced evolution of personal writing habits over time in a process that invites contemplation on the impermanence of identity and the perpetual motion of life. This project unveils a bespoke alphabet, a collection of symbols that have emerged organically and subconsciously from years of repetitive writing motions, rather than from a conscious design process. This personalized lettering system, born from 17 years of my engagement with the English alphabet, straddles the line between the familiar and the alien, resembling an extraterrestrial script or abstract squiggles while encapsulating the essence of my written history. In this process, we are left with an ephemeral constant; a dynamic set of symbols determined by the aggregation of static marks.

This work probes the notion that our daily practices, however mundane, inscribe upon us a series of marks—personal glyphs that may grow estranged over time, echoing the perpetual transformation inherent in life. "Pending Font" embodies this ephemeral constancy, a living lexicon that evolves alongside its creator, never reaching a definitive state. It reflects the dynamic interplay between change and permanence, highlighting the inevitable fading of past iterations of oneself as new layers of experience accumulate. The current set of markings is thus also not a “final version” as my writing will continue to evolve. As we resemble an older version of ourselves less and less, our pending fonts will continue to diminish.
